Minnesota to Honor Outstanding Refugees
Minnesota Ag Connection - 10/20/2017

The Minnesota Department of Human Services will honor seven Minnesotans with Outstanding Refugee Awards to celebrate the courage, resilience and entrepreneurship of refugees and their children, and to recognize their contributions to the state.

"Refugees have experienced horrendous situations in their home countries, sacrificed a great deal to survive and are welcome additions to Minnesota," said Human Services Commissioner Emily Piper. "We are thrilled to honor those who have given up so much and contributed so greatly to our state."

The 2017 recipients for Civic Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals who have had refugee status, or their children, who are outstanding leaders in their community are:

- Hsa Daw Mu, Marshall

- Ayan Omar, St. Cloud

- Fatima Said, Winona

- Paw Wah Toe, St. Paul

The 2017 recipients for the Entrepreneurship Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals who have had refugee status, or their children, who are making innovative contributions to their community in business, the arts or education, are:

- Sadia Salah, Hindi Store, Marshall

- Blia Vang, adult foster care, Lake Elmo

- Yohannes Zemedhin, Red Sea Restaurant and Bar, Minneapolis

Commissioner Piper or a department representative will present the awards at individual ceremonies around the state.

In 2016, Minnesota welcomed 3,059 refugees. To help refugees rebuild their lives, the Minnesota Department of Human Services and its partners provide social services and employment supports to give refugees the foundation they need to create a prosperous future for their children and to strengthen our state.
