Young Farmer and Rancher Contest Winners Announced

Young farmers in Blue Earth County and Winona County captured top honors in the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) competitions.

Megan Roberts of Madelia in Blue Earth County took home first in the Discussion Meet contest, and Glen and Melinda Groth of Winona County won the Achievement Award contest. The competitions were held during the MFBF 99th Annual Meeting at the DoubleTree in Bloomington.

These county Farm Bureau YF&R members will advance to national competition where they will represent Minnesota at the national competition at the American Farm Bureau Federation's (AFBF) Annual Meeting in Nashville Jan. 5-10. They also received a recognition plaque from MFBF, $500 prize sponsored by Gislason & Hunter, a trip to the MFBF YF&R Conference to be held near Red Wing Jan. 26-27 and a leadership development trip to Washington D.C.

The 2018 AFBF YF&R Awards will each have four award winners. The winner will receive a credit of $35,000 towards a 2018 Ford pick-up truck sponsored by Farm Bureau Financial Services. Three finalists and a Case IH Farmall tractor. Special thanks to our sponsors, Farm Bureau Financial Services and Case IH for their support of the American Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers Discussion Meet.

The Discussion Meet finalists competed in two semi-final rounds on Saturday morning followed by the final four competition. Contestants were judged on their basic knowledge of critical farm issues and their ability to exchange ideas and information in a setting aimed at cooperative problem solving.

Megan Roberts took home the top honor. Megan is a doctoral student in agricultural education at Texas A&M University and works for the University of Minnesota as an Extension educator in agricultural business management. She and her husband, Daniel raise corn, soybeans and hogs with his family.

Other top finalists in the Discussion Meet were Carl Sackreiter of Winona County, Katie Winslow and Amanda Carlson of Goodhue County.

The Achievement Award contestants are selected on their exceptional efforts in agriculture through farm management and leadership achievements as well as effective use of capital in their farm.

Winning this year's Achievement Award competition were Glen and Melinda Groth of Ridgeway. Glen and Melinda grow corn soybeans and alfalfa and milk dairy cows near Ridgeway. They have two daughters.
