Minnesota Sugarbeet and Potato Production Down

Minnesota corn production is forecast at 1.37 billion bushels, down 7 percent from last year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Crop Production report. Based on conditions as of November 1, yields are expected to average 184 bushels per acre, down 7 from the October 1 forecast and a decrease of 10 bushels per acre from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 7.90 million acres with 7.45 million acres harvested for grain.

Soybean production is forecast at 386 million bushels, slightly above last year. The yield is forecast at 50.0 bushels per acre, unchanged from the October 1 forecast but 2.5 bushels above 2017. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 7.80 million acres with 7.71 million acres to be harvested.

Sugarbeet production is estimated at 10.3 million tons, down 18 percent from the last year. Yield is forecast at 25.8 tons per acre, down 2.4 tons from the October 1 forecast, and down 4.8 tons from 2017. Acres expected to be harvested have decreased 9,000 acres from last year to 400,000 acres.

Fall potato production in Minnesota is forecast at 18.1 million hundredweight (cwt), down 2 percent from 2017. Yield is forecast at 420 cwt per acre, with an expected 43,000 acres harvested.

The forecasts in this report are based on November 1 conditions and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next corn and soybean production estimates will be published in the Crop Production -- Annual Summary report which will be released in January 2019.
