Winter Farmers Markets Move Food, Fun Indoors
Minnesota Ag Connection - 11/15/2019

The fun of finding fresh, local food at farmers markets doesn't have to end when cold weather arrives. Winter farmers markets around Minnesota offer locally grown food and products from November through April.

Minnesota is home to dozens of winter farmers markets selling Minnesota Grown meats, cheese, microgreens, eggs, honey, jams, canned goods, baked goods, maple syrup, milk, winter greenery, squash, apples, onions, soap, candles, lotion, and more -- typically in indoor settings.

"Guests enjoy continuing to connect with some of their favorite vendors from the summer throughout the year," said Bonnie Hannah-Powers, market coordinator for Richfield Farmers Market. "Plus, there's live music at our indoor market for guests to enjoy while shopping!"

Visitors can enjoy family-friendly activities such as live music, crafts, and hot food vendors. Winter farmers markets also offer an opportunity to find holiday presents such as gloves made of locally grown wool, soap made with locally sourced lard, wines, and cheeses.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Minnesota Grown Directory lists 28 winter markets across Minnesota. Be sure to check each for times and frequencies, as some change their schedules in the winter. The Minnesota Grown Directory is available in print and online, and is a great resource for finding winter farmers markets. The 2019 Directory includes 28 winter farmers markets. Free, printed copies of the Directory may be ordered online or by calling 1-888-TOURISM (1-888-868-7476).
