NASS Reports Minnesota 2018 Annual Crop Production

Corn for grain production in Minnesota during 2018 is estimated at 1.36 billion bushels, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Crop Production 2018 Summary report. The estimate is down 1 percent from the November 1 forecast and down 8 percent from 2017. Minnesota's corn for grain yield is estimated at 182 bushels per acre, 2 bushels less than the November 1 forecast and 12 bushels below the previous record yield of 194 set in 2017. Area harvested for grain is estimated at 7.49 million acres, up 40,000 acres from the November 1 forecast but 140,000 acres below 2017. Corn planted for all purposes in 2018 is estimated at 7.90 million acres, down 150,000 acres from 2017.

Corn for silage production is estimated at 7.48 million tons, down 3 percent from 2017. The silage yield estimate of 22.0 tons per acre, up 0.5 ton from 2017. Producers harvested 340,000 acres of corn for silage, a decrease of 20,000 acres from 2017.

Soybean production is estimated at 389 million bushels in 2018, up 1 percent from both the November 1 forecast and 2017. Production is the second highest on record, behind 2016. Minnesota soybean growers averaged 50.5 bushels per acre in 2018. This is up 0.5 bushel from the November 1 forecast and up 3 bushels from the 2017 yield. The harvested acreage of 7.71 million is unchanged from the November 1 estimate but 380,000 acres below 2017. Soybean planted acreage, at 7.80 million acres, is down 350,000 acres from 2017.

All hay production for the state is estimated at 3.08 million tons, down 19 percent from the 3.80 million tons produced in 2017. Producers averaged 2.52 tons per acre, down from 2.79 tons in 2017. All hay harvested acres is estimated at 1.22 million acres, down 10 percent from 2017.

Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures production is estimated at 2.05 million tons, down 30 percent from 2017. Producers averaged 2.85 tons per acre, 0.5 ton below the 2017 yield. Harvested acres, at 720,000, are down 150,000 acres from 2017. Minnesota producers seeded 130,000 acres of new seedings of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures in 2018, down 30,000 from the previous year.

Other hay production is estimated at 1.03 million tons, 16 percent above 2017. Producers averaged 2.05 tons per acre, up 0.25 ton per acre from 2017. Harvested acres of other hay, at 500,000, is up 10,000 from the previous year.

Sugarbeet production is estimated at 10.5 million tons, down 16 percent from the record set in 2017. Yield averaged 25.7 tons per acre, down 4.9 tons from the record set last year. Producers harvested 408,000 acres, down 1,000 acres from 2017.

Oil Sunflower production is estimated at 99.0 million pounds, up 54 percent from 2017. Producers averaged 2,250 pounds per acre, up 15 percent from 2017. Oil sunflower harvested area is 44,000 acres. Non-oil sunflower production is estimated at 15.1 million pounds, up 10.9 million pounds from 2017. The non-oil sunflower yield is estimated at 2,150 pounds per acre, up 900 pounds from 2017. Area harvested for non-oil sunflowers is 7,000 acres.
