Walz: Minnesota Stands with Our Hmong and Lao
Minnesota Ag Connection - 02/19/2020

Governor Walz Tuesday sent a letter to Secretary Mike Pompeo of the U.S. Department of State voicing strong opposition to any agreement resulting in the deportation of Hmong and Lao Minnesotans. The Trump Administration has confirmed they are in talks with the government of Laos to allow for the deportation of Lao and Hmong immigrants from the United States, an action that could affect hundreds of Minnesotans.

"Our Hmong and Lao neighbors are small business owners, combat veterans who fought alongside American soldiers, and passionate people who have shaped Minnesota's culture into what it is today," reads the letter from Governor Walz. "Most of the Southeast Asian Americans with a deportation order have never lived in those countries or no longer have ties there. Uprooting this community is unjust, immoral, and a betrayal of our country's patriotic duty to these refugees."

Minnesota is home to the largest concentration of Hmong residents in the U.S. and the fourth largest population of Lao residents.
