Smith to Discuss Farm Bill Priorities with Stakeholders

On Friday, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, will focus on food and nutrition as she meets with Minnesota farm leaders from across the state in St. Paul, delivers Meals on Wheels to seniors in South St. Paul, and discusses the importance of nutrition programs at an Eagan food pantry.

At 9:30 a.m.: Smith will meet with farm leaders, food and nutrition experts from across the state who are part of her newly formed Farm Bill Working Group to discuss Minnesota's priorities in the five-year federal Farm Bill that will soon be debated in the Senate. With tens of thousands of Minnesota jobs connected to agriculture, the Farm Bill's farm, energy, and nutrition provisions will have a dramatic economic impact on farmers, businesses, schools, and families across the state. The meeting is open to media. There will be a media availability at approximately 10:55 a.m.

At 11:15 am.: Smith will meet with staff from Metro Meals on Wheels and help deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound individuals in South St. Paul. President Trump has proposed substantial cuts to the funding that supports Meals on Wheels, which Sen Smith is so important to the health and well-being of thousands of older adults across Minnesota.

At 1 p.m.: Smith will tour an Eagan food-shelf and later meet with Minnesotans who it to supplement their monthly food needs. She will be joined by leaders from The Open Door Pantry in Eagan, as well as officials from Hunger Solutions, and Second Harvest Heartland. Sen. Smith said the Farm Bill directs tens of billions of dollars each year in nutrition funding for schools, low-income families, as well as for food banks and food shelves in Minnesota and across the country.
