Fun, Family Meet at White Earth 4-H Winter Camp
Minnesota Ag Connection - 03/15/2017

"Family" is named in the Minnesota 4-H pledge for a reason, and that's important to the White Earth Tribal 4-H program through University of Minnesota Extension. "Family-friendly ways to enjoy healthy activities" is how one participant sums it up.

In collaboration with the White Earth Tribal and Community College, Extension 4-H held a winter camp at the Rediscovery Center at White Earth Lake. "The event was a success with beautiful weather, good food, and 70 people attending over the course of the two-day event, including 50 youth," says Dana Trickey, 4-H program coordinator.

Families participated together in cultural learning opportunities, including ice fishing and smoking the fish, arts, crafts, games, snow sledding, and learning more about 4-H learning and growing opportunities.

When asked what they learned and liked about the camp, some answers were:

"Talking about the traditions and history of Anishinaabeg [people]."

"Making the birdhouse."

"Visiting with the little kids."

"[Learning] Ojibwe words for some fish."

"Learning to put a hook on a line. The fish almost bit me!"

In addition to all of the fun and learning, this event provided an opportunity for the White Earth community to discuss and share ideas about how they would like to see 4-H take shape there. "It's key to have the community involved in building and growing the program around the kids' and families' interests," says Trickey.

The partners for this program are White Earth Nation; University of Minnesota Extension; White Earth Tribal and Community College. Additional funders for the 2017 event included the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Mentoring Opportunities for Youth Initiatives, and the 4-H National Mentoring Program. The partners also would like to thank Reeds Family Outdoor Outfitters in Walker Minn. for providing supplies for ice fishing.
