Board of Regents Focuses on University History

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents reviewed the Report of the Task Force on Building Names and Institutional History. The task force was charged by President Eric Kaler and Executive Vice President and Provost Karen Hanson in the fall of 2018 to review the names of four buildings on the Twin Cities campus: Coffey Hall, Coffman Memorial Union, Middlebrook Hall and Nicholson Hall.
Following the review of the task force's report, the Board of Regents received President Kaler's preliminary recommendation to remove the names of the four buildings.
Board of Regents policy gives the Board full authority to name buildings or remove existing names from buildings. The Board is expected to act on the President's preliminary recommendations at an upcoming meeting.

Regents also heard the annual report of the student representatives to the Board. Focus areas of the report included sustainability, student mental health and campus climate.
There are eight students from across the University system who serve as student representatives to the Board. Their annual report provides the Board of Regents with perspective on current issues and concerns of students systemwide.
"The input of the student representatives to the Board is invaluable to the governance process." said Board of Regents Chair David McMillan. "I appreciate the thoughtfulness of their report, and I expect the Board will continue conversations on the students' priorities throughout the year."
The Board also:
- Recognized Joseph A. Konstan for his service as chair of the Faculty Consultative Committee. Professor Konstan is a Distinguished McKnight Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the College of Science and Engineering on the Twin Cities campus.
- Approved the acquisition and financing of the University Village property located at 2515 University Avenue SE, Minneapolis, a mixed-use residential and retail space.
