Franken Pushes Trump to Keep Promise to Dairy
Minnesota Ag Connection - 04/24/2017

U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), who met with dairy farmers in Minnesota, is calling on President Trump to stand by his recent promise to support the American dairy industry, which has been hit with a major slump as a result of unfair foreign trade practices.

Sen. Franken has already pressured the Trump Administration for stronger enforcement of our federal trade laws after Canada put up unreasonable trade barriers on American dairy exports. But now, with the President vowing to address this emergency during a speech earlier this week in Wisconsin, Sen. Franken is pressing him to move beyond lip-service.

"I'm glad that President Trump has acknowledged the dire emergency that dairy farmers in Minnesota and across the country are facing right now," said Sen. Franken. "Minnesota dairy farmers have been hit hard because of new, unfair Canadian trade barriers, and they are rightfully worried about how to make ends meet. I strongly urge the President to move beyond simply saying the right things. We need swift action to help American dairy farmers get through this crisis. I plan to fight for a solution and I'll be continuing to press the President on this issue."

Sen. Franken has been a long-time champion for Minnesota's farmers and rural communities. This week, he joined an ag-policy roundtable in Farmington with Minnesota Ag Commissioner Dave Frederickson, along with local farmers and officials from six different counties, to talk about the dairy crisis and solicit input for the upcoming Farm Bill. And then today, he held a similar meeting at the Minnesota Farmers Union in St. Paul.
