Polk County Leads State in Dry Edible Bean Production

In 2016, Polk County was the largest dry edible bean producing county in Minnesota with 910,000 hundredweight, according to estimates released today by the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service. Otter Tail and Marshall were second and third, respectively, of the published counties. Northwest Minnesota was the largest dry edible bean producing district, with 1.37 million hundredweight produced.

The highest yielding county was Wadena with a yield of 2,370 pounds per acre. Otter Tail and Renville had the next two highest yields. The lowest yielding county was Marshall at 1,180 pounds per acre. Polk County had the second lowest yield at 2,140.

Statewide, Minnesota produced 3.28 million hundredweight of dry edible beans, down 16 percent from 2015. Yield increased 90 pounds from last year to 2,230 pounds per acre.
