Morris to Honor Community Engagement Winners April 24
Minnesota Ag Connection - 04/20/2018

The University of Minnesota, Morris Office of Community Engagement (OCE) announced 2018 winners of its Community Engagement Awards: Andrea Wathanaphone '18, Heidi Meyer, and Rilee Moulton '14. Winners make a big difference on campus and in the Morris community. Winners were honored Thursday at the Minnesota Campus Compact awards ceremony in the Twin Cities and at the Office of Community Engagement awards ceremony on April 24.

In addition to serving as a student leader and facilitator for community days of service, Wathanaphone has promoted community engagement programs in the Student Center and involved new students in them. Her humility and competency inspire her peers.

"Andrea was an upperclassman whom I looked up to as a freshman," says nominator Kari Gillette '19, Crookston, a co-curricular student leader for OCE. "She is involved in many extracurricular activities and classes on campus, but she always makes sure she has time to volunteer. Her tireless efforts to take a leadership role in different service events has definitely opened the eyes of many--she is well deserving of this award."

As a lead teacher for the Community English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, Meyer has helped the program develop. Meyer is a role model to the students who make up the program's staff, and her engagement with Morris's growing Latinx community exemplifies UMN Morris's vision for public outreach.

As a Spanish speaker and former UMN Morris student, Meyer had connections with the Morris Hispanic community, notes nominator Windy Roberts, Spanish teaching specialist and faculty advisor to the ESL community program. Meyer was aware of the need for a community ESL program and has offered flexibility and commitment to meet that need.

"Heidi has invested countless hours of work and has developed great relationships with her Hispanic ESL students, fellow ESL instructors, and assistants," says Roberts. "She has never missed a day or asked for recognition, and she has helped to build a strong community."

A committed community volunteer, Rilee Moulton '14 has increased access to healthy foods. Moulton's positive, creative outlook and commitment to improving the local food system have helped Morris move toward increased food security.

Moulton has volunteered with Someplace Safe Thrift Store and other projects. But for nominator Mary Jo Forbord, coordinator of Morris Healthy Eating, what stands out is his involvement in Taste Buds at the Morris Public Library.

"Rilee has a passion for improving the food system by increasing access to healthy food for all citizens," says Forbord. "Team members depend on him for creative ideas, tactful communications, and tenacity--all important attributes for building a strong and welcoming community where everyone has a seat at the table."

Honoring Morris's mission to promote global citizenship, the awards recognize students, faculty, staff, and community members who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to community engagement. Honorees will be recognized with Minnesota Campus Compact Presidents' Awards.
