Minnesota Ag Connection - 05/18/2017

Researchers, natural resource managers and engaged citizens are invited to the Third International Sustainable Wetland Plant Management Conference on May 31-June 1 on the campus of North Dakota State University.

This day-and-a-half conference will focus on sustainable hybrid cattail management and utilization. Presentations and discussions will include management relevant to wildlife and habitat enhancement, water quality improvements, biomass utilization and green infrastructure.

"While there are many challenges to managing hybrid cattails, there are also unique commercial uses for the harvested material," says David Ripplinger, bioenergy and bioproduct economics specialist with the NDSU Extension Service and director of the Bio Energy and Products Innovation Center at NDSU. "Possible environmental benefits and commercial utilization opportunities are very eye-opening."

Featured speakers are:

- Hank Venema, keynote speaker, International Institute for Sustainable Development

- Shane Lishawa, Loyola University-Chicago

- Richard Grosshans, International Institute for Sustainable Development

An optional tour of the North Ottawa Impoundment, a floodwater retention project site in the Bois de Sioux Watershed near the headwaters of the Red River of the North, will be held after the conference.

The North Ottawa Impoundment Project is managed for habitat enhancement and water quality benefits, along with flood damage reduction management. Cattail management is a key component to this multi-benefit management system.
