Flint Hills Resources Caps Campaign by Exceeding $1M in Giving
Minnesota Ag Connection - 05/24/2019

When science suggested that Ducks Unlimited begin delivering conservation projects south of the Canadian border, Flint Hills Resources was one of the first companies to engage with the organization's mission. For more than 30 years, the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend Refinery in Rosemount, Minn., has partnered with DU to underwrite the state's raffle and sponsor programs for local fundraising events. The income generated through these programs is among the organization's most flexible sources of funding, which is used to conserve the continent's highest-priority landscapes for waterfowl.

In 2007 Flint Hills Resources helped DU build on its newly formed Living Lakes Initiative. Through this key initiative DU enhances shallow lakes, restores and protects small wetlands and native prairie uplands, and acquires wetlands and surrounding uplands from willing landowners to increase public land holdings. DU's partnership with Flint Hills Resources has now expanded beyond Minnesota to support the Living Lakes Initiative in Iowa; the Gulf Coast Initiative in Texas; the Heartland, Heritage, and Habitat Initiative in Nebraska; the Great Lakes Initiative in Wisconsin; and even the Southeast Wetlands Initiative in Georgia.

"We are incredibly proud of our longstanding partnership with Ducks Unlimited because we appreciate the work they do to preserve and protect the natural habitats we cherish immensely," said Geoff Glasrud, vice president and manufacturing manager of the Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend Refinery. "Ducks Unlimited is a true champion of the outdoors, and we look forward to building on the great work that's been done thus far."

Flint Hills Resources' $1.3 million in total investments on these landscapes has had a broad and profound impact, conserving more than 250,000 acres across North America. This year promises to be just as productive. DU's slate of work in 2019 includes 3,400 acres of wetland and upland restorations and acquisitions in Minnesota alone.

With operations located primarily in Texas and the Midwest, Flint Hills Resources produces a diverse range of fuels and other products that improve people's lives. Its refineries, pipeline systems, and chemical plants produce essential building blocks for a wide variety of products people use every day. Its ethanol and biodiesel operations make renewable energy that helps cars operate more efficiently, while also creating nutrients that help feed the world. Based in Kansas, the company has more than 4,500 employees and is built on a culture of innovation, safety, respect for the environment, and community involvement.

"Ducks Unlimited welcomes conservation partnerships from companies that share and value our priority landscapes," says DU Senior Director of Development Adam DeHaan. "Modern society creates broad ecological impacts across North America. Try as we might, hunters simply can't stem the tide by ourselves. With Flint Hills Resources as our partner, Ducks Unlimited can continue delivering impactful land conservation across Minnesota and beyond."
