Nearly 20 Percent of Second-Cutting Hay Complete

Mostly dry weather allowed for 4.8 days suitable for field work during the week ending Sunday, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Crop stages advanced well despite the cooler than normal temperatures. Field activities for the week included side dressing corn, applying herbicides, and cutting small grain hay.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 8 percent short, 84 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 5 percent short, 86 percent adequate and 9 percent surplus.

Minnesota's corn condition was rated 78 percent good to excellent. The soybean crop had scattered reports of blooming, and crop condition rated 76 percent good to excellent.

Eighty-seven percent of the spring wheat crop had reached the jointing stage or beyond this week with 42 percent of all spring wheat headed. Spring wheat condition declined slightly to a rating of 86 percent good to excellent. Oats jointing progressed to 92 percent, with 57 percent headed. Oats condition was 82 percent good to excellent. Ninety percent of the barley crop was jointing with 45 percent of the crop headed. Barley condition decreased slightly this week, and was rated 85 percent good to excellent. Dry edible bean crop condition was estimated at 4 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 66 percent good, and 6 percent excellent. Sunflower condition was rated 84 percent good to excellent. Potato condition was rated 91 percent good to excellent. Sugarbeet condition rated 66 percent good to excellent.

The first cutting of alfalfa hay was nearly finished at 95 percent complete, and second cutting progressed to 19 percent complete. All hay condition had no change from the previous week at 83 percent good to excellent. Likewise, pasture condition rated similar to last week with 78 percent good to excellent.
