Some Minnesota Areas Hoping for More Rain

Mild weather during the week ending Sunday, allowed for 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Rains quenched the dry areas through the middle of the state, but some southern and northern counties were left hoping for more. Activities for the week included small grains harvesting and spraying of pesticides.

Topsoil moisture supplies rated 5 percent very short, 20 percent short, 72 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 4 percent very short, 20 percent short, 73 percent adequate and 3 percent surplus.

Ninety-three percent of the corn crop was silking, with 36 percent of the crop at the dough stage. Corn crop condition rated 80 percent good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from the previous week. Nearly all soybeans were blooming this week at 95 percent blooming. Seventy-one percent of the crop was setting pods, one day ahead of the five year average. Soybean condition rated 74 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from the previous week.

Nearly all of the small grain crops have completed turning color. Nine percent of the spring wheat crop was harvested, 11 days behind average. Spring wheat condition rated 85 percent good to excellent, down 2 points from the previous week. The oat harvest for grain or seed was 30 percent complete. Oat condition was rated 83 percent good to excellent. Twenty percent of the barley crop was harvested. Barley condition rated 87 percent good to excellent, up 1 point from the previous week. Nearly all of the dry edible bean crop had reached the blooming stage. Seventy-two percent of the crop was setting pods. Dry edible bean condition rated 75 percent good to excellent, down 10 points from the previous week. Sunflower condition rated 90 percent good to excellent. Potato harvest was 8 percent complete this week. Potato crop condition was rated 93 percent good to excellent, down 3 points from the previous week. Sugarbeet condition rating improved to 89 percent good to excellent.

The second cutting of alfalfa hay was 94 percent complete. The third cutting was 51 percent complete. All hay condition rating declined to 76 percent good to excellent. Pasture condition rating also declined to 59 percent good to excellent.
