Fair Booth to Highlight Vaccines, Antibiotics, Drinking Water
Minnesota Ag Connection - 08/22/2017

Many people understand the individual benefits of vaccinations, but the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) 2017 State Fair booth will also highlight the fact that vaccinations benefit our entire community. Through a series of games and interactive displays, visitors to this year's booth will learn that when people get vaccinated, they help protect people who can't get vaccinated. This could include babies too young to be vaccinated or people with weakened immune systems due to illness or medical treatments like chemotherapy.

"Vaccines work by protecting you, your family and your community from deadly disease," said Kristen Ehresmann, infectious disease director for MDH. "Most Minnesotans fully vaccinate their children and are helping protect themselves and their communities."

Booth visitors will play a variety of games, developed in partnership with the Science Museum of Minnesota, that illustrate the role of vaccines in keeping people, families and communities healthy. They can also spin a quiz wheel to test their vaccine knowledge and pick up information on how to check their vaccination status, such as requesting their vaccination record using the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection to ensure they are up-to-date on all the recommended vaccines.

The MDH booth is in the Education Building, located just north of Dan Patch Avenue on Cosgrove Street. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the fair.

Other MDH attractions at the fair will include:

- Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative

The Minnesota One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative program is sponsoring a booth in the Eco Experience building. The booth features information for fairgoers about how widespread use of antibiotics for humans and animals drives the problem of antibiotic resistance and the importance of keeping antibiotics out of Minnesota's lakes and streams.

Fairgoers can learn what they can do to combat antibiotic resistance and how to be better stewards of the antibiotics they use. Minnesota currently uses a One Health approach to antibiotic stewardship, recognizing that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are connected.

- Drinking Water

MDH's environmental health program is sponsoring a drinking water exhibit, also in the Eco Experience building. The exhibit teaches visitors about Minnesota's drinking water, encourages them to explore where our water comes from and understand the importance of keeping it clean.

The environmental health program is also participating in the "We Are Water" traveling exhibit, which features a collection of water stories from across the state. Visitors are encouraged to add their own stories to the interactive exhibit produced in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota Historical Society, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

Located near these exhibits in the Eco Experience building, the highly popular Water Bar gives fairgoers a chance to sample drinking water from around Minnesota.

- Lactation Station

Located on the west side of Underwood Street between Lee and Randall avenues, the Lactation Station gives moms a quiet, cool place to breastfeed or pump breastmilk. While women in Minnesota can breastfeed anywhere they are legally allowed to be, including the fair, the myTalk 107.1 Lactation Station, sponsored by the Minnesota WIC Program, offers moms and babies a private place to feed or pump and pick up information about WIC services.

- Sage cancer-screening

On Aug. 28, the Sage cancer-screening program will be showcased in the rotating Healthfair11 booth in the Health Fair 11 Building's East Crossroads auditorium located at the intersection of Dan Patch Avenue and Cooper Street.

Visit the booth to hear more about Sage programs and to learn how you can access mammograms, Pap tests, and colorectal cancer tests at one of the 450 clinics across the state. Visitors can participate in an interactive game to win an emery board nail file or lip balm reminding them of the importance of cancer screening. If you are unable to make it to the Sage Programs booth, you can still learn more and access free cancer screenings by calling 1-888-6HEALTH.
