Minnesota Crop Production Forecasts Up from 2021

Minnesota corn production is forecast at 1.49 billion bushels, up 6 percent from the previous year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Crop Production report. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 193.0 bushels per acre, up 15.0 bushels from last year. Corn planted acreage is estimated at 8.20 million acres. An estimated 7.70 million of the acres planted will be harvested for grain.

Soybean production is forecast at 372 million bushels, up 4 percent from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 50.0 bushels per acre, 3.0 bushels higher than 2021. Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 7.50 million acres with 7.43 million acres to be harvested.

Spring wheat production is estimated at 65.0 million bushels, up 17 percent from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 56.0 bushels per acre, up 3.0 bushels from the July forecast and up 8.0 bushels from 2021. Spring wheat planted acreage is estimated at 1.25 million acres with 1.16 million acres to be harvested.

Oat production for grain is forecast at 6.30 million bushels, up 44 percent from the previous year. The expected yield is 60.0 bushels per acre, down 2.0 bushels from the July forecast but up 3.0 bushels from 2021. Oat planted acreage is estimated at 165,000 acres with 105,000 acres to be harvested for grain.

Barley production is forecast at 1.96 million bushels, up 5 percent from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 56.0 bushels per acre, down 9.0 bushels from the July forecast but up 1.0 bushel from 2021. Barley planted acreage is estimated at 45,000 acres with 35,000 acres to be harvested.

Sugarbeet production is forecast at 11.2 million tons, down 9 percent from the previous year. The yield is forecast at 25.4 tons per acre, 5.6 tons below 2021. Sugarbeet planted acreage is estimated at 455,000 acres with 441,000 acres to be harvested.

Production of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures for hay is forecast at 1.94 million tons, up 12 percent from the previous year. Yield is expected to average 2.90 tons per acre, up 0.30 ton per acre from last year. Production of other hay is forecast at 954,000 tons, up 62 percent from last year. Yield for other hay is expected to average 1.80 tons per acre, up 0.40 ton per acre from last year.

The forecasts in this report are based on August 1 conditions and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next crop production forecasts, based on conditions as of September 1, will be released on September 12.
