Minnesota Potato Harvest 11 Days Behind Average

Warm, dry weather allowed Minnesota farmers to make substantial progress on small grain harvest during the week ending Sunday, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Despite scattered areas receiving significant precipitation, there were 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork. Field activities for the week included harvesting small grains, cutting and baling hay, and applying insecticides as needed.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 10 percent very short, 23 percent short, 61 percent adequate and 6 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 8 percent very short, 18 percent short, 64 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus.

Eighty-two percent of the corn has reached the dough stage or beyond, 9 days ahead of the five-year average. Corn dented was at 26 percent, 5 days ahead of average. Corn for silage harvest has begun and was 5 percent complete, almost 2 weeks ahead of average. Corn crop condition declined slightly to 74 percent good to excellent.

Ninety-seven percent of the soybean crop was setting pods or beyond, 11 days ahead of average. Five percent of the soybean crop was turning color, 6 days ahead of last year. Soybean condition fell to 67 percent good to excellent.

Seventy-six percent of spring wheat has been harvested, almost 2 weeks ahead of average.

Seventy-eight percent of the oats for grain have been harvested, 10 days ahead of last year.

Eighty-nine percent of barley has been harvested, 2 weeks ahead of average.

Ninety-five percent of the dry edible bean crop was setting pods or beyond, 5 days ahead of average. Eighteen percent of the dry edible bean crop was dropping leaves, 10 days ahead of average. Dry edible bean condition rated 72 percent good to excellent.

Sunflower condition fell slightly to 68 percent good to excellent.

Potato harvest was 5 percent complete, 11 days behind average. Potato condition was rated 93 percent good to excellent.

Sugarbeet condition was rated 75 percent good to excellent.

Pasture conditions were rated 55 percent good to excellent.
