Minnesota Ag Connection - 10/22/2020

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy announced Sophia Murphy as its next executive director.

"Our global community is in a period of uncertainty, marked by the climate crisis, a global pandemic, rising economic inequality and a divisive political environment that is threatening our democratic institutions. Through a thoughtful and thorough selection process, IATP's board of directors selected Sophia as the strong, steady and forward-looking leader to take the helm of IATP during this pivotal time," the organization said in a statement.

"I can't imagine a better choice to lead IATP in the coming years. Sophia Murphy has a long and deep history with IATP, and she will hit the ground running to continue and amplify our important work on trade, agriculture and climate justice. Her work and IATP's have been intertwined for decades, and we are thrilled Sophia will lead us in this next chapter," says IATP Board Chair Pamela Saunders.

The IATP board members weree unanimous in their enthusiasm at the addition of Murphy to the IATP staff.

"Food and agricultural systems are a powerful source of hope and innovation. They connect us to our past and provide living proof of humanity's astonishing adaptive capacity. IATP has a world class reputation for research, analysis and advocacy. I could not be prouder for this chance to lead with this team in the shared fight for just food systems that protect human and ecosystem health," said Murphy.

Renowned internationally as a policy expert and advocate focused on resilient food systems, agriculture and international trade, Murphy counts among her previous roles program and research director, policy analyst and published writer. Murphy has 30 years of experience working with national and international civil society organizations and with government, intergovernmental organizations and universities. She served as a board chair for ActionAid USA. Bilingual in English and French, Murphy has also served on the United Nations Committee on World Food Security's High-Level Panel of Experts.

Most recently, she served as a specialist on agriculture, trade and investment within the Economic Law and Policy Program at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). She is in the last stages of completing her PhD at the University of British Columbia's Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability.

Murphy possesses a deep understanding of IATP's mission and vision. She joined the organization under the leadership of IATP's founder Mark Ritchie in 1997 as a senior associate, then oversaw the opening of IATP's Trade Information Project office in Geneva and directed our trade and global governance program from 2000 to 2006. Until 2018, she served as a senior advisor to that program.

With a long and rich history of high-level analysis and on-the-ground advocacy, IATP is uniquely positioned to respond and develop solutions to the multiple crises our world faces. Rooted in Minnesota and present in global spaces, too, relationships and alliances are core to IATP's mission and practice. Under Murphy's leadership, IATP will continue to nurture and expand these relationships, renewing our commitment to hear from diverse voices, build resilient food systems, and realize our vision for trade, agriculture and climate justice.
