40 Percent of Minnesota Pastures Rate Good to Excellent

Most of Minnesota received needed moisture which meant farmers had just 2.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Sunday, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Field activities included applying fertilizer, tilling, seeding hay and planting small grains.

Spring wheat was 7% planted, over 2 weeks ahead of last year and 6 days ahead of the 5-year average. Oats were 19% planted, 10 days ahead of last year and 9 days ahead of normal. Scattered reports of barley, potato and sugarbeet planting were received.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 4% very short, 19% short, 64% adequate and 13% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 4% very short, 27% short, 61% adequate and 8% surplus. Some reports mentioned continued dry conditions.

Pastures continued to green up with the warm temperatures. Pasture conditions were 4% very poor, 13% poor, 43% fair, 36% good and 4% excellent. Livestock conditions were good.
