Ethanol Industry challenges EPA’s climate benefit doubts
USAgNet - 09/26/2023

The debate is heating up between the ethanol industry and the EPA’s Science Advisory Board (SAB) about corn ethanol's benefits for our climate. Geoff Cooper, CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, stood firm against the SAB’s doubts regarding corn ethanol’s climate positivity.

More than 18 years ago, the Renewable Fuels Standard law aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions was enacted. The SAB’s recent report questioned whether corn ethanol, a major renewable fuel, meets the required emission reduction criteria.

Cooper passionately disagrees, citing various studies and research proving corn ethanol reduces emissions by 40-50% compared to traditional fuels. He highlighted the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory’s findings, which the SAB report overlooked, supporting corn ethanol’s significant emission reduction.

The main doubt of the SAB is whether making more farmland for corn ethanol production is bad for the environment. Cooper argued that EPA assessments clearly show a decrease in U.S. cropland since 2007, debunking the expansion theory.
