USDA extends deadline for Discrimination Aid Program
USAgNet - 09/27/2023
Did you know the USDA is giving farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners more time to apply for some much-needed assistance? The original deadline was October 31, but it’s now been pushed to January 13, 2024. This change comes after people shared that they needed more time to understand and apply for the program.
Tom Vilsack believes in being open and transparent about this program. The USDA has been busy, opening 30 local offices and holding over 600 events across the country to get the word out. They’ve also used digital, print, and radio to reach out to rural communities.
This program, part of the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to support those who faced discrimination in USDA farm lending programs before January 2021. A whopping $2.2 billion is set aside for this. The funds awarded will depend on the number of applicants and the impact of the discrimination.
Applicants can apply online or by mail and don’t need a lawyer. The USDA is also extending the deadline to request records that could support applications. For more details or assistance, you can visit the official website or call the national call center.
This initiative shows USDA’s commitment to fairness and addressing past issues, ensuring everyone gets a fair chance. It’s part of USDA’s broader effort to improve services and remove barriers for everyone.
This extension is a big step towards making sure no one is left behind, and everyone gets a fair shot at the assistance they need.
