The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has determined that atrazine, a widely used herbicide, does not threaten endangered or threatened species. The decision clears an important step in the regulatory process and allows the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continue its review of the product.
Agricultural groups have supported the decision, saying it reflects scientific research and real-world farming experience. They argue that atrazine remains a valuable tool for controlling weeds and helping farmers maintain crop yields.
Atrazine has been used in corn production for more than six decades to manage a broad range of weeds. Farmers also use it in conjunction with conservation practices such as no-till and reduced-till systems, which can help reduce soil erosion, conserve moisture, and lower fuel use.
First registered in 1959, atrazine is one of the most extensively studied herbicides used in agriculture. Federal agencies have reviewed its safety and environmental impacts multiple times over the years.
Supporters also point to Minnesota's long-running water quality monitoring efforts as an example of responsible stewardship. The state's Pesticide Management Plan combines monitoring, research, grower education, and best management practices to help protect water resources.
Recent monitoring data indicate that atrazine detections in groundwater remain low and below Minnesota's drinking water reference standards. Agricultural organizations say these results demonstrate the effectiveness of science-based management and monitoring programs.
As the EPA continues the registration review process, farm groups plan to advocate for policies that balance environmental protection with farmers' access to effective crop protection tools.
