The administration's bold step to curb food waste

The Administration has taken a crucial step towards sustainability by announcing a draft of the National Strategy to Reduce U.S. Food Loss and Waste.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) jointly published this strategy for public comment. It underscores the commitment to mitigate food loss and waste's environmental impact, including its contribution to climate change.

Tom Vilsack emphasized the significance of tackling food loss and waste for building a resilient food system and mitigating climate impacts. This strategy advances USDA's goals to address global food security, manage climate change consequences, and promote innovative practices.

The draft strategy, integral to the administration’s National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, sets four objectives: preventing food loss, waste, increasing organic waste recycling, and supporting relevant policies.

The USDA's actions include investing $30 million in the Composting and Food Waste Reduction Cooperative Agreements, expanding partnerships for educational materials, and funding innovative packaging technology research.

Additionally, the USDA will continue to inform businesses about the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act's liability protections. The public is encouraged to comment on the strategy through This initiative marks a significant move towards a sustainable future, aiming to establish a circular economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
