The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is offering a four-session course, Plant Structure and Function for Botanical Artists: Flowers, Seeds and Fruits, for intermediate and advanced artists interested in gaining a deeper understanding of plant anatomy. The course will be taught by Dr. Lynne Gildensoph, a retired University of St. Catherine biology professor and experienced botanical artist.
Held from October 21 through November 11, 2026, the program will take place at the McVay Learning Lab in the Bee Center at the Farm at the Arb. Participants will study the structures and functions of flowering plants while exploring the diversity of plant forms found in nature.
The course is designed to help artists identify and understand plant parts through the study of plant morphology and physiology. Students will learn botanical terminology and gain insight into how different plant structures contribute to plant growth, reproduction, and survival.
Through hands-on activities, participants will examine flowers, seeds, seedlings, and fruits using dissecting microscopes and magnifying tools. They will also practice creating scientifically accurate botanical drawings and learn proper methods for labeling plant structures.
A key focus of the program is understanding variations in plant forms across different plant families. By observing and comparing structures, students will develop stronger observational skills and a more accurate approach to botanical illustration.
Dr. Gildensoph taught plant biology and plant physiology throughout her academic career at the University of St. Catherine. She has also instructed botanical art courses through the Minnesota School of Botanical Art and is widely recognized for combining scientific expertise with artistic education.
Enrollment is limited to 15 participants, providing a focused learning environment for artists seeking to improve both their botanical knowledge and illustration skills. The program is hosted by the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, with Dr. Gildensoph serving as the lead instructor.
