Minnesota 4-H Livestock Judging Contest Set for 2027

Minnesota 4-H Livestock Judging Contest Set for 2027

By Scout Nelson

The annual Southwest Regional 4-H Livestock Judging Contest is scheduled for June 16, 2027, at the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton, Minnesota. The event welcomes young participants from all counties who are interested in learning about livestock and testing their judging skills.

Murray County hosts the contest each year, providing an opportunity for youth to take part in livestock judging activities. Participants can register as individuals or join a team. The contest encourages young people to develop their knowledge of livestock, improve their observation skills, and gain experience in making decisions about animals.

The event runs throughout Wednesday, June 16, 2027, from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Central Daylight Time. It takes place at the Murray County Fairgrounds, located at 3048 Broadway Avenue, Slayton, Minnesota, 56172.

The contest is open to youth from all counties. Young people interested in agriculture and livestock activities can participate, regardless of whether they enter individually or as part of a team.

Participation costs depend on the participant's county. Entry is free for youth from Murray County. Participants from other counties pay $20 for an individual entry, while team registration costs $50.

Pre-registration is required for everyone who plans to participate. Organizers will share the registration link closer to the event date. Interested families and youth are encouraged to watch further announcements as summer approaches.

The event is organized with support from the University of Minnesota Extension. Questions about the contest can be directed to Kim Hause or Kerstin Thoms, Extension Educators in Youth Development, or Mallory Vos, Extension Administrative Assistant.

The University of Minnesota Extension aims to make its programs accessible to everyone. Participants who need disability-related accommodations should contact the event organizers at least two weeks before the contest. Requests received after that deadline will be considered whenever possible.

The contest is offered in English. Interpreter services may also be available when requested in advance.

The Southwest Regional 4-H Livestock Judging Contest provides young people with a chance to build agricultural knowledge, practice livestock evaluation, and connect with other youth interested in farming and animal agriculture.
