The Cover Crop Field Day: Setting up for success is an educational event designed to help participants learn more about cover crops and their benefits. It highlights recent research conducted by the University of Minnesota, focusing on how cover crops improve soil quality and farming practices.
The program will include discussions on seeding rates, proper timing for crop termination, and how to cover crops with interacting plant diseases. It will also explain how these crops reduce soil erosion and support better land management. Participants will learn about interseeding methods, which involve planting cover crops alongside main crops, and explore how these practices affect the overall landscape.
Another key topic is the use of cover crops for grazing and supporting pollinators like bees. The event will also introduce camelina research, an alternative crop gaining interest in its environmental and economic benefits. These sessions aim to provide simple, useful knowledge for better farming decisions.
The event is open to people with or without experience in covering crops. It is especially useful for those working in agriculture or anyone interested in learning more about sustainable farming methods. The program will take place outdoors, allowing participants to observe real field conditions.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the field tour will start promptly at 9:00 a.m., weather permitting. The event will rain or shine, so attendees should prepare accordingly. Lunch will be provided for those who register by June 19. Registration is free and can be completed using this link.
