Recent H5N1 avian influenza detections reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have affected poultry operations in Minnesota, raising concerns for the state's turkey industry and poultry producers.
A commercial turkey farm in Wright County, Minnesota, reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) that affected approximately 29,800 birds. The case was identified as part of ongoing H5N1 detections being monitored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
Minnesota is one of the nation's leading turkey-producing states, making disease prevention and flock protection especially important. The latest outbreak highlights the continued risk posed by H5N1 and the need for producers to remain vigilant as the virus continues to circulate.
Federal animal health data show that during the past 30 days, eight commercial flocks and six backyard flocks were infected with avian influenza, affecting an estimated 360,000 birds. These outbreaks continue to create challenges for poultry producers working to protect flock health and maintain production.
Animal health experts continue to stress the importance of strong biosecurity practices. Limiting visitor access, monitoring bird health, controlling farm traffic, and reducing contact with wild birds remain key strategies for preventing disease transmission and protecting commercial poultry operations.
The virus has also been detected in dairy cattle. Recent reports confirmed two additional infected dairy herds in Idaho, contributing to a total of 88 H5N1 detections in cattle reported in 2026.
For Minnesota producers, the Wright County outbreak serves as a reminder that continued surveillance, rapid detection, and strict biosecurity measures remain essential to protecting the state's poultry industry from further H5N1 outbreaks.
