Minnesota Corn and CFANS Partner to Improve Farming

By Scout Nelson

Partnerships play an important role in building a strong future for agriculture. Researchers, farmers, local communities, policymakers, and industry groups can work together to solve farming challenges, share knowledge, and develop practical solutions.

The University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) works closely with the Minnesota Corn Research and Promotion Council (MCR&PC) to support research that benefits corn growers across the state.

Since the research arm of Minnesota Corn began in 1990, the partnership has helped improve corn production while supporting practices that protect natural resources.

Agricultural research provides farmers with useful information to improve crop production, use nutrients more effectively, and protect soil and water. Through its partnership with CFANS, Minnesota Corn supports projects that address important farming needs.

The research covers several areas, including nitrogen management, water quality, drainage systems, corn pest surveys, seed treatments, and ways to control crop diseases. Other projects focus on soil health, crop rotation, cover crops, corn breeding, genetics, precision agriculture, manure management, and climate-smart farming.

These studies help researchers understand current challenges and develop methods that farmers can use in their fields. The findings also support better farm decisions, efficient resource use, and long-term agricultural growth.

“Research at the University of Minnesota College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences delivers the data farmers need to increase on-farm productivity, improve nutrient efficiency, and protect soil and water,” said Jordan Goblish, chair of Minnesota Corn Research and Promotion Council.

Goblish also stresses the importance of continued investment in agricultural research.

“Minnesota Corn is proud to invest corn checkoff funds in CFANS research focused on water quality, soil fertility, agronomy, genetics, and more. We appreciate the long-term partnership with CFANS and look forward to continued research investments that help keep Minnesota farms competitive and resilient for the future,” explains Goblish.

The partnership supports research and education that can help Minnesota farmers respond to changing conditions, improve productivity, and protect natural resources.

By continuing to fund research across different areas of agriculture, Minnesota Corn and CFANS aim to strengthen farming communities and support a productive and sustainable agricultural industry.
