Minnesota Grain Gathering Focuses on Soil Health

Minnesota Grain Gathering Focuses on Soil Health

By Scout Nelson

The University of Minnesota Extension, with support from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), will host the first annual Grain Gathering on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, from 1 to 6 p.m. Central time at Aune Hall, 1508 Aune Dr SE, Rochester, Minnesota.

The Grain Gathering is a farmer-focused event designed to promote knowledge-sharing and collaboration around food-grade oats and the role of small grains in resilient, profitable crop rotations. The event will provide research updates, local insights, and management strategies to improve crop performance and soil health.

The agenda will feature a panel discussion with local producers, presentations on soil health benefits from crop diversity, and analysis of the economic potential of three-crop rotations.

Experts will also share updates from the Olmsted Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) groundwater protection program, discuss key oat growth stages, and review results from oat variety trials, offering agronomic recommendations for improving productivity and sustainability.

The Grain Gathering welcomes a broad audience, including producers, farm advisors, conservation professionals, and agricultural educators. The event will serve as a networking platform for those seeking to enhance profitability while maintaining environmental stewardship in Minnesota’s grain systems.

Participation in the event is free of charge, thanks to funding and support from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Interested participants can sign up to be notified when registration opens.

The University of Minnesota Extension remains committed to ensuring equal access and opportunity for all attendees. Those needing accommodation are encouraged to contact Extension educator Mary Nesberg at nesbe007@umn.edu or 507-328-6225 at least two weeks prior to the event. Interpreter services may be available upon advance request.

Through this new annual gathering, Minnesota Extension aims to strengthen local grain networks, promote sustainable production, and support producers in building resilient cropping systems for the future.
