Minnesota Hemp Acres Dropped Significantly in 2022


Minnesota hemp growers planted 710 acres of hemp in open fields in 2022, down 1,940 acres from 2021, according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – National Hemp Report. Harvested acres for 2022 were estimated at 570, compared with 2,300 acres the previous year. Hemp producers used 99,519 square feet under protection for production.

Area harvested for floral hemp in the open was estimated at 455 acres, accounting for approximately 80 percent of the total hemp acreage harvested from open fields. Production of floral hemp grown in the open for 2022 was 132,000 pounds, down 36,000 pounds from 2021. The average yield for 2022 floral hemp in the open was 290 pounds per acre, down 190 pounds per acre from the previous year. The value of floral hemp grown in the open totaled $11,076,000 compared to $9,604,000 in 2021.
