Minnesota Seeks Diverse Voices for Emerging Farmers

By Scout Nelson

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has announced openings for seven volunteer members to join the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group (EFWG) for two-year terms. Applications are open now, and Minnesotans committed to supporting new and emerging farmers are encouraged to apply.

The EFWG plays a central role in strengthening agricultural opportunities across Minnesota. Its focus is on identifying barriers that limit entry into farming while helping to create resources for farmers to start or sustain their businesses.

“The work of the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group is important in helping identify barriers to entering farming and creating resources to support new and emerging farmers in our state,” said Assistant MDA Commissioner Patrice Bailey. “We continue to build out our Emerging Farmers Office and its programs.”

Membership in the group is open to all Minnesotans, and the MDA is especially encouraging applications from individuals who bring diverse perspectives. These include women, veterans, individuals with disabilities, American Indian or Alaska Native residents, members of communities of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, young people under 35, and those living in urban areas with populations greater than 5,000.

The application portal for EFWG membership will close at 11 p.m. on September 12, 2025. Interested participants can find application details and further information on the EFWG page of the MDA website. Questions may be directed to the Emerging Farmer Office by email at mda.emerging.farmers@state.mn.us.

The MDA expressed gratitude to current and departing members for their dedication and contributions to advancing the goals of the Emerging Farmers’ Working Group. By opening these opportunities, the state continues its commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and innovation within agriculture.
