The University of Minnesota Extension's final vegetable update highlights important harvest, storage, cover crop, and field management considerations as growers wrap up the growing season and prepare for winter.
As fall harvest progresses, growers are focusing on pumpkins, winter squash, tomatoes, beans, peas, onions, and shallots. While crop management options become more limited late in the season, proper harvest timing and storage practices remain important for maintaining crop quality.
Tomato growers have reported mixed results this year, with some farms facing challenges from disease pressure, drought conditions, and fruit quality issues. Extension specialists encourage growers to investigate potential nutrient deficiencies, particularly low potassium levels, when symptoms such as yellow shoulder or internal whitening appear.
Cooler temperatures have benefited fall-planted peas and beans, although growers should continue monitoring for pests such as bean leaf beetles. Later plantings have generally shown improved performance compared to earlier crops.
Onions and shallots are reaching harvest maturity, with yellowing leaves and tops falling over serving as key indicators. Proper curing, ventilation, and storage are essential for reducing losses caused by post-harvest diseases and maintaining bulb quality during long-term storage.
The update also emphasizes the importance of cover crop management and appropriate seeding rates. Excessive seeding can lead to lodging and reduced stand quality, while recommended rates generally produce better cover crop performance.
Crop residue management remains a critical post-harvest practice. Removing, mowing, or incorporating crop residues can help reduce insect populations, limit disease carryover, and improve field sanitation ahead of the next growing season.
The season concludes with a focus on effective harvest management, crop storage, cover crops, and residue management as growers prepare their farms for winter and begin planning for the next production cycle.
