University of Minnesota Extension is highlighting the connection between soil health and nitrogen management in the latest episode of the Advancing Nitrogen Smart podcast. The discussion explores how soil health principles and the 4Rs of nutrient stewardship can work together to reduce nitrogen losses to water while improving agricultural sustainability.
The podcast examines how practices such as minimizing soil disturbance, maintaining year-round ground cover and encouraging biological activity can help reduce runoff and nitrate leaching. These strategies support healthier soils and improve the ability of farming systems to retain nutrients, reducing the risk of nitrogen entering lakes, rivers and groundwater.
Experts also discuss the role of nitrogen cycling in agricultural soils. Factors such as soil moisture, temperature and microbial activity influence whether nitrogen is released from organic materials through mineralization or temporarily tied up in crop residue through immobilization. Understanding these processes can help farmers make more informed nutrient management decisions throughout the growing season.
