Urban trees may play a larger role in shaping the future of Minnesota’s forests than many people realize. Researchers and forestry professionals are studying trees in cities, neighborhoods, parks, and residential areas to better understand how forests can adapt to changing climate conditions.
University of Minnesota Extension Forestry, including the Climate-Ready Woodlands Program and the University of Minnesota Urban Forestry Outreach and Research Lab. These organizations are leading efforts to identify climate-resilient tree species and strengthen future forest stewardship.
Researchers believe trees growing outside traditional forests can provide valuable information about how different species respond to environmental changes. Their performance can help landowners and forestry professionals determine which trees may be best suited for future conditions.
As Minnesota’s climate continues to change, woodland owners and natural resource specialists are evaluating which species can remain healthy and productive over time. The Climate-Ready Woodlands program was created to encourage the use of native and near-native tree species that may be better adapted to future environments.
Researchers identified a need for more information about near-native trees that naturally grow farther south. Although these species may tolerate warmer conditions, their ability to thrive in Minnesota’s diverse ecosystems remains an important area of study.
To address these questions, Extension researchers launched participatory science projects focused on monitoring tree growth and survival. Early results showed that many near-native species are already growing in urban and suburban areas, including yards, boulevards, parks, and community landscapes.
This finding led to a partnership between the University of Minnesota Urban Forestry Outreach and Research Lab and Extension Forestry. Together, the groups are tracking near-native urban trees and collecting data on their health, adaptability, and long-term performance.
The project demonstrates the close connection between urban and rural forests. Researchers note that lessons learned from trees growing in communities can help improve woodland management practices and strengthen forest resilience throughout Minnesota.
Stewardship efforts come from a variety of sources, including homeowners, city forestry departments, and woodland managers. Activities such as watering young trees, protecting them from wildlife, and planting climate-adapted species contribute to healthier forests in the future.
The initiative has received support from the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources through the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. Funding has helped advance the Trialing Climate-Ready Woodland Trees in Urban Areas project and expand research on tree adaptation.
As monitoring efforts continue, each tree provides new insights into the future of Minnesota’s forests. “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” This observation by Ralph Waldo Emerson reflects the idea that even a single tree can contribute valuable knowledge for building healthier and more resilient forest ecosystems.
