Apple Tree Care Training Program

Apple Tree Care Training Program

By Scout Nelson

Apple growers and enthusiasts in Moorhead, Minnesota, have the opportunity to attend a hands-on workshop focused on pruning dormant apple trees. The event will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 1 to 3 p.m. Central time at the Clay County Extension Office located at 715 11th St N.

The workshop is designed for both commercial and hobby apple growers, providing practical guidance on pruning techniques, decision-making, and the proper care of pruning tools. Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools, including pruning shears, loppers, and hand saws, and to dress appropriately for the weather, as the session involves active outdoor learning.

“Learn about the fundamentals of pruning dormant apple trees in this hands-on workshop. We'll cover pruning techniques, decision-making, and best practices for tool care,” said Jillian Patrie, Extension Educator.

The cost to participate is $20. Interested individuals should register by April 1 through the University of Minnesota Extension course.

The University of Minnesota Extension is committed to ensuring equal opportunity for participation in all programs. Participants who require accommodations for disabilities are encouraged to contact the event organizer two weeks before the workshop. Requests received later will be addressed whenever possible. Interpreter services may also be available upon advance request, and the workshop is delivered in English.

This apple pruning workshop provides a valuable opportunity for growers to improve tree health, increase productivity, and learn practical skills directly from extension experts. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of pruning principles, proper tool use, and strategies to maintain strong and healthy apple trees in their orchards.

For more information or to contact the organizer, contact Jillian Patrie at patri350@umn.edu or 218-299-7338.

This hands-on session promises active learning, useful knowledge, and enhanced orchard management skills for all apple growers in the Moorhead area.
