Commercial Animal Waste Technicians Recertification Course Available Until October 31

Commercial Animal Waste Technicians (CAWTs) in Minnesota can now complete their required 2026 recertification through an online training course. The program gives licensed professionals a flexible way to meet their annual training requirements.

The University of Minnesota Manure Team is reminding Commercial Animal Waste Technicians, or CAWTs, that the online recertification course is available beginning September 1, 2026. The training allows participants to complete the required work from home.

The course remains available through October 31, 2026. CAWTs who need to renew their licenses should complete the training before the deadline to avoid additional certification requirements.

The training covers several topics that are important for safe and responsible manure management. These subjects help technicians stay informed about changes in farming practices, regulations, environmental protection, and public concerns.

One part of the course provides updates from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. These updates help technicians understand current programs and requirements that may affect their work.

The course also covers manure application timing and the use of nitrification inhibitors. Understanding when and how manure is applied can help support crop needs while reducing possible environmental risks.

Regulatory updates from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency are another important part of the training. Participants learn about changes to rules and permit related to manure management.

Water quality is also a major focus. Proper manure handling and application can help protect lakes, rivers, groundwater, and other water resources.

The course also discusses public perception and ways to promote the animal agriculture industry. Clear communication can help communities better understand responsible manure management and its role in farming.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture stresses the importance of completing recertification on time. Anyone who does not complete the required training, either online or in person, by October 31, 2026, must retake the certification exam to renew their license.
