The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will offer a free nitrate testing clinic for private well owners at Farmfest 2026, held Aug. 4-6 near Redwood Falls. Visitors can also learn about agricultural programs, water quality resources, and conservation initiatives.
The clinic helps private well users check the quality of their drinking water. Nitrate levels above recommended limits can pose health risks, making regular testing an important step for protecting families and understanding water conditions.
Nitrate contamination is a common concern in rural areas because it cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. Wells in locations with sandy soils, fractured bedrock, or older infrastructure may be at greater risk.
Unlike public water systems, private wells are maintained by individual owners. Regular testing helps detect potential problems and ensures water remains safe for household use.
Participants can bring a water sample collected on the day of the event for quick testing. Results are provided in less than five minutes, and no personal information is required.
In addition to the nitrate clinic, the MDA booth will provide information on financing programs, grants, rural mental health resources, weather tools, and water quality initiatives. Free nitrate testing opportunities are also available through MDA partner programs throughout the year.
