As summer fades, shorter days and cooler nights bring a new burst of color to Minnesota gardens. Chrysanthemums, commonly called mums, are popular fall flowers, but not all mums are able to survive a Minnesota winter.
Many plants sold at stores are annual florist mums, which work well in containers but may not return after freezing weather.
The University of Minnesota has bred northern-hardy perennial chrysanthemums since 1977. Its breeding program selects plants for winter survival, strong growth, dependable flowering, and performance in cold climates each season.
These hardy mums can provide seasonal color year after year when planted in suitable garden conditions.
Hardy mums are different from many common fall porch mums. They are perennial plants that can handle cold and frost and return in spring.
Most grow best in full sun and well-drained soil. Their natural response to shorter daylight and cooler temperatures helps them form flower buds from late summer into fall.
Gardeners can choose from several plant types. Cushion mums grow into compact, rounded mounds about 12 to 18 inches tall and can become covered with flowers. They are useful in flower borders and perennial beds where a neat shape is desired.
Upright mums offer a more traditional garden appearance. They generally reach 18 to 24 inches tall, with flowers held on sturdy stems. These plants work well beside ornamental grasses and other late-season perennials.
Mammoth shrub cushion mums provide a much larger display. By their second year, some can spread 3 to 4 feet across and produce thousands of flowers. Their ability to tolerate frost can help extend the flowering season into October.
Wave mums create low, wide mounds that can reach about 24 inches across while staying near 12 inches tall. Their spreading form makes them suitable for garden edges, slopes, and large plantings.
Choosing several hardy mum varieties can extend fall color from late August until the first frost. Instead of replacing annual mums each year, gardeners can plant hardy chrysanthemums for dependable, colorful perennial interest.
