Agritourism is growing across Minnesota as farms add attractions and events that bring visitors to working agricultural operations. Activities such as corn mazes, pumpkin patches, petting zoos and seasonal festivals are helping farmers create new sources of income while engaging the public.
A popular example is Fresh Acres in Monticello, where families gather each year for the farm’s Fall Festival. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including a corn maze, corn pit, petting zoo, food vendors and family-friendly entertainment.
The festival also features attractions such as face painting, arts and crafts, inflatable play areas and a pumpkin patch. These experiences encourage visitors to spend time on the farm and learn more about agriculture.
One of the newest attractions at Fresh Acres is an apple cannon, which has become a favorite among guests. The addition highlights how farms are continually introducing creative experiences to attract visitors and encourage repeat attendance.
Agritourism allows farmers to diversify their operations and generate additional revenue beyond traditional agricultural production. It also helps strengthen connections between consumers and the farming community.
The growth of the industry has led to increased support from organizations such as the University of Minnesota Extension. Through education and outreach efforts, farms can access resources to help develop successful agritourism ventures.
Freya Thurmer, an Extension educator with the University of Minnesota Tourism Center, works with producers to support agritourism development across multiple counties. Her efforts reflect the increasing importance of agritourism within Minnesota’s agricultural economy.
Agritourism benefits both farms and local communities by boosting visitor traffic and supporting rural businesses. Operations like Fresh Acres demonstrate how agriculture, education and recreation can come together to create valuable experiences for visitors.
