Why Anhydrous Ammonia Remains a Top Nitrogen Choice

Anhydrous ammonia continues to be a highly effective and cost-effective nitrogen fertilizer for Minnesota producers, despite urea’s rise as the state’s leading nitrogen source. Factors such as safety concerns, the need for dedicated application equipment, and restricted soil conditions for use have contributed to its reduced adoption, said Brad Carlson, Extension Educator with University of Minnesota Extension.

Anhydrous ammonia contains 82% nitrogen, making it the most concentrated nitrogen fertilizer available. Its high nutrient concentration means less product is needed to achieve target application rates, helping reduce transportation, handling, and application costs.

The fertilizer serves as the foundation for other nitrogen products, including urea and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN). Because these products require additional processing, anhydrous ammonia is generally the most cost-effective nitrogen source under normal market conditions.

From a scientific perspective, anhydrous ammonia behaves differently in the soil than many other nitrogen fertilizers. After application, it rapidly converts to ammonium, which binds to soil particles and remains relatively stable before gradually converting into nitrate.

This slower conversion process helps reduce the risk of nitrogen loss. Its caustic properties also temporarily suppress the microorganisms responsible for converting ammonium to nitrate, allowing nitrogen to remain available for a longer period.

Because of these characteristics, anhydrous ammonia remains the preferred nitrogen source for fall applications across much of Minnesota. Its ability to retain nitrogen in the soil makes it an important tool for effective nutrient management.

Economic conditions continue to support its use as well. Nitrogen fertilizer recommendations are influenced by the relationship between fertilizer costs and corn prices, and recent market conditions have brought that ratio closer to historical norms.

Although growers have several nitrogen fertilizer options available during spring and in-season applications, anhydrous ammonia continues to offer a strong combination of affordability, efficiency, and agronomic performance. As fertilizer markets evolve, it remains an attractive choice for farmers seeking to maximize nitrogen use efficiency and improve crop profitability.
