25th Tri-State Drainage Forum Highlights Water Innovation

Agricultural producers, drainage contractors, researchers, and industry professionals from across the Upper Midwest will gather on October 1, 2026, for the 25th Annual Tri-State Drainage Research Forum. Organized by South Dakota State University, Iowa State University, and the University of Minnesota, with support from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the event marks 25 years of collaboration in agricultural drainage and water resource management.

Over the past quarter-century, the forum has provided a platform for sharing research, emerging technologies, and practical solutions related to agricultural drainage. During that time, drainage systems have evolved from simple water removal tools to advanced water management systems that support productivity while protecting soil and water resources.

The program will begin with a presentation by Gary Sands of the University of Minnesota Extension. He will review key developments in drainage research, policy, and technology adoption that have shaped water management practices throughout the Midwest.

This year's forum will feature presentations covering a range of agricultural water management topics. Experts will discuss regional drainage research, nutrient management, water recycling systems, and conservation practices aimed at improving farm resilience and environmental outcomes.

Ryan Lefers of South Dakota State University and Lindsay Pease of the University of Minnesota will provide updates on the SWITCHES drainage research projects. Their work focuses on improving understanding of drainage systems and identifying practices that benefit both crop production and environmental stewardship.

Keith Schilling of the Iowa Geological Survey will discuss multi-purpose grassed waterways and their potential role in erosion control and water management. These conservation practices are gaining attention for their ability to reduce runoff while providing additional hydrological benefits.

Nutrient management will be another key topic at the event. Chris Hay of Hay Water Solutions will examine methods for accurately estimating nitrogen reduction performance in wetlands and bioreactors, helping producers and stakeholders better evaluate conservation outcomes.

Chuck Brandel of ISG will present strategies for drainage water recycling, including systems that capture, store, and reuse water. These approaches can help improve crop resilience during dry periods and make more efficient use of available water resources.

Researchers Sushant Mehan, Tulsi Ram Pokhrel, and Tiansong Qi from South Dakota State University will discuss automated drainage technologies and seasonal riparian area management. Their presentations will highlight how advanced management systems can improve water control and environmental performance.

Participants will also learn about the NFACT Calculator, Iowa State University's new nitrogen application rate tool designed to support precision nutrient management and improve fertilizer-use efficiency.

The event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring Dean Lemke, Trey Allis of Prinsco, and Keegan Kult of the Agricultural Drainage Management Coalition. Panelists will explore future research priorities, educational needs, and opportunities for collaboration within the agricultural drainage industry.

The forum will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Owatonna, Minnesota. By bringing together researchers, educators, industry experts, and producers, the event aims to encourage innovation and support the continued advancement of agricultural water management across the region.
