Climate Analogs Help Farmers Plan Future Successfully

Farmers are facing changing weather patterns that include warmer temperatures, longer dry periods, heavier rainfall, and greater weather uncertainty. While these conditions remain manageable today, experts encourage farmers to prepare for future climate changes through better long-term planning.

According to University of Minnesota Extension researchers and Extension specialists, climate analogs allow farmers to learn from producers in other regions that already manage warmer temperatures, changing rainfall, and longer growing seasons.

This practical approach gives farmers useful ideas before these conditions become common in their own communities.

A climate analog identifies counties with similar future temperature and rainfall patterns expected between 2040 and 2060. Instead of relying only on climate projections, farmers can study how producers in those areas successfully manage crops, water resources, and pests.

One example compares Pope County, Minnesota, with Jefferson County, Wisconsin. Researchers found that warmer future conditions may make winter wheat and soybean double-cropping possible in Minnesota.

Today, soybeans planted after winter wheat often fail to mature before frost. However, climate models suggest that by mid-century, soybeans could reach maturity before the first fall freeze in nearly every growing season. Farmers can prepare by exploring cover crops, crop diversification, and future equipment needs.

Climate analogs also help improve water management. Researchers compared Minnesota counties with counties in Nebraska that already experience warmer and drier growing conditions.

Nebraska farmers use precision irrigation methods such as center-pivot irrigation, soil moisture sensors, irrigation scheduling, variable-rate irrigation, and deficit irrigation. These practices help improve water efficiency and reduce waste. As Minnesota experiences longer dry periods and more variable rainfall, these technologies may become more valuable for protecting crops and conserving water.

The tool also supports better pest management. Warmer temperatures may change when insects, diseases, and weeds appear during the growing season.

By studying regions with similar climates, farmers can prepare for these changes instead of reacting after problems develop. Regular field scouting and Integrated Pest Management remain important tools for identifying pests early and reducing crop damage.
