Connecting Consumers to Food and Farming

Connecting Consumers to Food and Farming

By Scout Nelson

CommonGround Minnesota is a group of dedicated women farmers focused on fostering conversations about food and farming with consumers. Established in 2010 with support from national agricultural organizations, the initiative answers questions, dispels myths, and provides insights into farming practices.

The year 2024 marked a significant chapter for CommonGround Minnesota. They launched a revamped website, a fresh newsletter, and hosted events to deepen consumer engagement. One major highlight was their state conference in March, where volunteers explored food trends, practiced communication skills, and brainstormed new event ideas. A standout result was the Food and Farming trivia nights, hosted across different venues, drawing nearly 100 participants eager to learn about agriculture.

Collaboration was key this year. Volunteers engaged in national-level events, such as Ag on the Mall and Women in Ag Celebration in Washington, D.C. and attended the National CommonGround conference to enhance their outreach capabilities.

New initiatives, like CommonGround Night Out, brought consumers closer to farming. This sold-out event at a renowned Minneapolis restaurant featured discussions with an award-winning chef and volunteers, creating a unique platform for agricultural dialogue.

The year also included a traditional Farm Dinner at a local farm. Despite weather challenges, attendees enjoyed a Q&A session on key topics like GMOs, sustainability, and animal welfare while experiencing a farm tour and local delicacies.

To conclude, CommonGround introduced a virtual Book Club, diving into historical farm life through an engaging novel. This initiative fostered meaningful discussions about agriculture’s past and present.

Through innovative events and dedicated volunteers, CommonGround Minnesota continues to connect consumers with agriculture, promoting knowledge and transparency in food and farming.
