The University of Minnesota Extension recognized faculty, staff, teams, and community partners with the 2026 Dean’s Distinguished Awards. Presented by Dean Bev Durgan, the awards celebrate individuals and groups advancing Extension’s mission of research-based education and outreach across Minnesota.
The Distinguished Friend of Extension Award was presented to State Representative Paul Torkelson for his long-standing support of Extension, agriculture, and rural communities. A former MARL participant and fourth-generation farmer, Torkelson has helped champion initiatives that strengthen educational opportunities and agricultural programs statewide.
Vasudha (Vasu) Sharma received the Distinguished Extension Faculty Award for her leadership in irrigation and water management education. Her work through the Minnesota Irrigator Program and outreach efforts has helped agricultural professionals improve water-use efficiency and adopt more sustainable production practices.
The Distinguished Extension Educator Award went to Megan Weber for her work in aquatic invasive species education. Through the AIS Detectors volunteer program, she has expanded public engagement, improved accessibility, and strengthened invasive species monitoring efforts across Minnesota.
Stephanie Rosenthal earned the Distinguished Staff Award for improving administrative processes and supporting Extension employees. Her leadership has enhanced collaboration, streamlined operations, and improved organizational effectiveness.
The Distinguished Leadership Award was presented to Anna Stockstad for her contributions to forestry education, climate adaptation, and forest stewardship programming. Her efforts have expanded educational opportunities and strengthened partnerships throughout Minnesota's forestry community.
Several teams were also honored for their collective achievements. Extension Communications received the Distinguished Leadership Team Award for excellence in storytelling, public engagement, and strategic communications, while the COMET (Changing Our Mental & Emotional Trajectory) Minnesota Team earned the Distinguished Team Award for promoting mental health awareness and literacy through community-based training programs.
The Hennepin County Master Gardeners received the Distinguished Inclusion Award for expanding access to volunteer and gardening education programs. Their efforts have increased participation, reduced barriers to involvement, and strengthened outreach to underserved communities.
The award recipients highlight Extension’s commitment to education, innovation, community engagement, and public service while addressing important needs in agriculture, natural resources, public health, and community development.
