The 93rd Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS), held October 3–5 in Hutchinson, celebrated young livestock exhibitors from across the state, drawing 706 participants and 1,476 animals. The annual event provided an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their livestock skills while earning cash prizes and scholarships.
This year’s show featured strong competition in the beef, swine, sheep, and goat divisions. In the beef category, exhibitors competed for championship titles across multiple breeds, including Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Simmental, and Shorthorn.
The show also featured impressive showmanship contests, where senior, intermediate, and junior exhibitors demonstrated leadership and handling skills in front of judges.
The swine competition highlighted entries from various breeds such as Duroc, Berkshire, Hampshire, and Yorkshire, with exhibitors showcasing their ability to raise and present healthy, well-conditioned animals. The event emphasized quality genetics, care, and presentation—key values in youth's livestock development.
The sheep and goat divisions also reflected strong participation. Exhibitors presented market lambs and goats representing several breeds, focusing on confirmation, health, and showmanship. Many participants placed among the top ranks and earned recognition for their handling abilities.
In addition to livestock competitions, the event featured the LEAD Challenge, designed to help participants strengthen their industry knowledge and communication skills. Contestants took part in speeches, interviews, and skill-based challenges to prepare for future careers in agriculture.
Several Kansas colleges also participated in the Flint Hills Mid-America Classic Livestock Judging Contest, held alongside the KJLS. Teams from Kansas State University and other institutions demonstrated their judging expertise and agricultural understanding.
Supported by sponsors including Cargill, Merck Animal Health, Farm Credit Associations of Kansas, and Kansas Farm Bureau, the Kansas Junior Livestock Show continues to promote agricultural education, youth development, and leadership within the state’s livestock industry.
