The University of Minnesota is celebrating its 175th anniversary with a larger presence at the Minnesota State Fair. Visitors can explore university history, research, agriculture, education, and youth programs across several fair locations.
A major feature is a collection of historic artifacts displayed at the University of Minnesota Central Building. The items highlight important contributions in areas such as medicine, agriculture, and robotics. These artifacts show how university research has influenced Minnesota and communities around the world.
The University also continues its research activities at the State Fair Research Building. More than 60 studies are planned, giving fair visitors opportunities to take part in research. Projects include studies involving brain activity during video games, sensor-equipped shoes for Parkinson’s disease research and 3D scans of faces and heads. The fair allows researchers to connect with many participants in a short period.
Youth and agriculture remain important parts of the University’s fair presence. Nearly 5,000 Minnesota 4-H members from all 87 counties are expected to display livestock and projects. Their work includes photography, robotics, livestock activities, and other projects completed throughout the year. The fair also features a llama and alpaca costume competition.
Veterinary education is another major focus. University veterinarians and students help care for animals and newborns at the CHS Miracle of Birth Center. About 200 baby animals are expected to be born during the fair. These activities also provide students with valuable hands-on training as Minnesota works to address its veterinarian shortage.
Agriculture and science exhibits provide more learning opportunities. Visitors can explore Minnesota’s dairy industry through a new ice cream exhibit, learn about wildlife and animal remains through the Offal Wildlife Watching Project and see insects up close at the Insect Zoo.
