Learn How to Test Farm Water for Safe Food Production

Testing farm water is an important step in protecting fresh fruits and vegetables from harmful contamination. Water used for irrigation, washing produce, or cleaning equipment can carry bacteria, viruses, or parasites if it is not properly monitored. Regular testing helps farmers identify problems early and maintain safe food production practices.

Annalisa Hultberg, Extension Educator, Food Safety, highlighted the importance of testing agricultural water for generic E. coli because it is a reliable indicator of fecal contamination. Detecting E. coli helps farmers understand whether disease-causing pathogens could also be present and allows them to take corrective action before produce is affected.

Farmers using wells or surface water should test for quantified generic E. coli instead of only requesting total coliform testing. While total coliform bacteria may indicate soil or environmental contamination, generic E. coli provides a better measure of possible fecal pollution that can introduce harmful pathogens.

Water testing laboratories, including public and private facilities, usually charge between $30 and $50 per sample. Farmers should contact a certified laboratory before collecting samples and clearly explain that the water will be used for irrigation or postharvest activities involving fresh produce. Following the laboratory’s collection instructions is essential for obtaining accurate results.

Proper sample collection also plays a major role in reliable testing. Farmers should wash their hands, clean the sampling point, allow water to flow before collecting, avoid contaminating the sample container, keep samples cool, and deliver them to the laboratory within the required time.

Well water should contain no detectable generic E. coli in a 100 mL sample. Surface water may naturally contain some bacteria, making it suitable only for irrigation rather than washing produce after harvest. If contamination is detected, producers should identify the source, disinfect wells if necessary, and test the water again to confirm safety.

Experts recommend testing well water at least once each year before the growing season begins. Surface water should be tested three to five times during the season, especially at planting, peak irrigation, and before harvest. Municipal water systems generally do not require testing because they are already regulated, although documentation may be needed for food safety audits.
