Tomato plants often develop leaf spots during the growing season, and several diseases can cause similar symptoms. Some diseases are caused by fungi, while others are caused by bacteria. Identifying the correct disease is important because each requires different management methods. Good cultural practices help reduce many problems, but proper diagnosis supports better long-term control.
Marissa Schuh, IPM Extension Educator, explained that early identification of tomato leaf diseases allows growers to choose the best management practices before infections become severe. Good plant care, regular monitoring, and quick action help reduce disease spread and protect crop quality.
Two common fungal diseases are early blight and Septoria leaf spot. Early blight usually attacks the oldest leaves first and produces large brown spots with circular rings. Septoria leaf spot often appears later in the season as fruit begins developing. It creates many small brown spots with light-colored centers on lower leaves.
Good airflow is one of the best ways to reduce fungal diseases. Growers should stake and tie tomato plants, remove infected leaves, and control weeds. These steps help plants dry more quickly after rain or irrigation. Preventive fungicides are available for both conventional and organic production and work best before diseases become widespread.
Bacterial diseases such as bacterial spots and bacterial speck also create leaf spots. These diseases often spread through infected seeds, transplants, tools, weeds, and crop debris. Wet weather allows bacteria to move easily between plants. Bacterial spots produce small brown spots surrounded by yellow halos, while bacterial specks create dark spots that later develop yellow edges.
Managing moisture is especially important for bacterial diseases. Proper pruning, staking, tying, and weed control improve air circulation and reduce disease spread. Copper-based products may provide control, although some bacterial strains have developed resistance.
If disease symptoms cannot be identified, growers should submit plant samples to a diagnostic laboratory for accurate testing. Correct identification helps improve both immediate treatment and future disease prevention.
